Won't matter even if the gear level is low, since you won't be fighting anything if you farm the lava challenge. Lastly, you might also want to keep Lucky coins and lucky dies (socketables again) and gear that grant high gold/magic find for when you want to make a drop/gold farming build. The items are listed at your transmuter, including the diamond sword from Minecraft, Claptrap's bolt etc. You might also want to save the specific blue items needed in the transmute for your first low level legendary item.
You'll want to at the very least want to farm ~ 10 to 15 Limoany skulls depending on your class. Familiars are typically small creatures, such as cats. The good ones such as Limoany, Karandir etc, don't drop till you are about level 55(?). This spell enables the caster to attempt to summon a familiar to act as his aide and companion. If you run into skull socketables, depending on what type, you might want to save them too.
TORCHLIGHT 2 SWEET AIDE PATCH
This will grant you a lot of high level socketables later for you to transmute into unique items / legendary shards (useful in a few other transmutes, better read up on their patch notes) or even just combining for the movement speed / casting speed chaos embers at high levels. Save at least your base socketables (posion / fire ember etc) since they added the ability to transmute smaller embers into bigger ones on consoles.
So transmute set items, blue and unique for those scrolls. Check out the items and make a mental note about the relative position of the items you'd like to keep (for example, the second set of boots, third axe, fifth ring, etc.). If you are playing normally though, you can transmute any unwanted set items into vendor boon scrolls for when you hit late game for easy endgame sets. Obtain the Sweet-Aide potion as a quest reward from Cacklespit in Act III. Save sweet aide (only if you intend to duplicate items)
